What’s Different About This Version?
During the famous breakdown scene, the movie appears to malfunction as the Gremlins take over the projection booth.
In the original theatrical release and on most DVD versions, Hulk Hogan storms into the cinema and forces the Gremlins to continue the film.
However, this hidden Easter egg reveals the VHS version of the scene. Instead of Hulk Hogan, legendary actor John Wayne appears on screen and deals with the troublesome Gremlins himself.
It’s a wonderfully bizarre alternate version that many fans never knew existed.
Why Was There a Different Version?
The Hulk Hogan scene only worked in cinemas because it was presented as if the film projector had genuinely broken down.
For the VHS release, the joke had to be changed because viewers were watching at home and couldn’t be fooled into thinking their tape had failed. The filmmakers therefore created a completely different gag featuring John Wayne.
