Alexander Payne’s Sideways is one of the most acclaimed comedies of the 2000s, winning the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and becoming a favourite among film fans and wine lovers alike. But if you own the DVD, you may not realise it also contains three hidden Easter eggs packed with extra content.
Here’s how to unlock them all.
Easter Egg 1: Hidden Making-of Slideshow
The first Easter egg is a short behind-the-scenes slideshow set to music.
How to find it
- From the Main Menu, select Scene Selections.
- Choose Scenes 13-16.
- Highlight Scene 15 (the thumbnail in the bottom-left corner).
- Press Left on your remote control.
A hidden red wine bottle icon will appear.
Press Enter and you’ll unlock a three-minute slideshow featuring behind-the-scenes photos from the making of Sideways.
Easter Egg 2: Hidden Gag Reel
The second Easter egg is a fun gag reel featuring outtakes and practical jokes from the set.
How to find it
- Go to the Language Selection menu.
- Using your remote control, press:
2 → 27
The DVD will immediately open a hidden gag reel filled with bloopers and on-set pranks that aren’t accessible through the normal menus.
Easter Egg 3: Behind-the-Scenes Spoof Featurette
The final Easter egg is also the longest one on the disc.
How to find it
- Go to the Deleted Scenes menu.
- Enter the following on your remote:
2 → 10
This unlocks a hidden, behind-the-scenes style spoof following a studio runner as he attempts to expose the excessive partying and carefree spending that supposedly took place during the production of Sideways.
The feature runs for around 13 minutes and is a genuinely entertaining extra for fans of the film.
